Kenya bets on phones, and most betting apps here are installed in a way Google never reviewed. Here is how to do that safely, or avoid it entirely.

Why betting apps are APKs, not Play Store downloads

Google Play permits real-money gambling apps only in a defined list of countries, and only from developers it has specifically approved for each. Operators outside that approval distribute the app directly from their own website as an APK file.

This is not evidence that an operator is disreputable — many large international bookmakers do it. But two consequences follow, and both are on you rather than on Google:

• No Play Store review. The app has not been through Google's screening.
• No automatic updates. You update manually, and running an outdated version is a common cause of login and payment failures.

Installing an APK safely

1. Go to the operator's website by typing the address

   Not via a link from a group chat, an SMS, a comment or a search ad. Typing the address yourself defeats almost every fake-APK attack.

2. Download only from that domain

   If the download redirects to a different site, stop.

3. Enable installation from unknown sources only for your browser

   Android asks per-app. Grant it to the browser you are downloading with, not system-wide.

4. Keep Play Protect enabled

   It still scans side-loaded apps and will warn you about known malware.

5. Review the permissions requested

   See the next section. This is where malicious apps reveal themselves.

6. Turn "install unknown apps" back off afterwards

   So nothing else can quietly use that permission later.

Permissions a betting app should never need

A sportsbook needs network access and storage. Almost nothing else. Refuse or uninstall if it requests:

• SMS access. The most serious one. On a phone with M-PESA, SMS access can mean reading your transaction messages and one-time codes.
• Contacts. No legitimate reason for a betting app.
• Accessibility services. Grants the app the ability to read and control your screen. Almost always malicious in this context.
• Call log or phone. Not needed.
• Device admin rights. Makes the app difficult to uninstall.
• Install other apps. A clear red flag.

Data and battery on Kenyan networks

• Pre-match browsing is light. Comparable to any content app.
• Live betting is much heavier. In-play pages poll continuously for odds updates.
• Background tabs keep consuming. A forgotten in-play page is the usual explanation for a bundle disappearing overnight.
• Live streaming is heaviest by far. Budget for it like video.
• Push notifications cost battery and attention. Turn them off — see below.

App or mobile site?

For most Kenyan bettors, the mobile site added to the home screen is the better default. You give up very little, and you sidestep the entire APK question.

Whatever you choose, these three settings are worth changing immediately:

• Turn off all promotional push notifications. Keep only account and payment alerts, if any.
• Do not save your password in the app or browser.
